The
Western G.R.E.E.T. Club meets
with Flamingo Elementary students
twice a month. Flamingo students
are thrilled that the GREET Club
members love to read with them
and they beg for high school
students to come more often. The
Flamingo Reading Coach
coordinates dates with the
Western High School GREET Club
president, Jorge Balmori.
As
club members walk from the high
school to the elementary school
they are ready to focus on
helping the elementary students
catch up on reading skills.
Lessons are developed by
Flamingo's Reading Coach which
encourage students to read
together to gain better
understanding of informational
text. The lesson consists of a
reading theme (animals, event,
place), a skill focus, a follow
up activity, and a group
presentation. High school
students read along with Flamingo
students. Reading interaction
continues as both groups of
students blend together. Lively
discussions fill the the room as
they ask questions to clarify the
passage. The partnership
continues as they work together
to create a follow up activity to
present to the group.
Presentations are the treasures
at the end of the rainbow. This
demonstration of mastery allows
all students to be actively
engaged in presenting information
to a group. Elementary struggling
readers have completed a book, an
activity and a presentation with
ease. This student book club
welcomes conversation and
meaningful reading discovery as
they share a book together for an
hour. This is a win-win situation
for all students. Flamingo
students enjoy books and learn
new information with the high
school students leading the way.
The Western GREET Club students
have the inner satisfaction of
making a difference. This reading
program is the perfect
partnership for both schools as
everyone leaves with a smile. The
Western Wildcats can roar with
pride as Flamingo students soar
with delight!

Western
High School's
JROTC
Written
By:
Pam
Wilkerson,
Western
High School's JROTC program has
purchased dictionaries for all
the Flamingo students in the
third grade classes. When they
give the dictionaries to the
elementary students they will
present a lesson on how to use
the dictionaries properly. A
wonderful skills lesson for
all!
Flamingo
Elementary is fortunate to have
Western High school students
available to volunteer as they
earn community service hours at
Flamingo. High school students
help out in the After School Care
program by tutoring students in
reading and math homework,
playing with them during
playground recess, chatting,
sharing ideas, creating bulletin
boards, art projects and
supporting the caregiver.

Ready
for the
Business World!
Written By:
Kelly Lazarus
First
graders at Fox Trail Elementary
participated in a manufacturing
unit where they designed,
created, and sold Mother's and
Father's Day gifts. Each
"company" manufactured products
which included: business card
holders, vases, bath salts, pen
holders, picture frames, and
trivets. Upon completion of the
their products, the students set
up a market area where they
advertised and sold their goods.
In addition to having a fun and
an educational experience, the
students gained many economic
concepts, such as: profit/loss,
supply & demand, and function
of a bank.

Fox
Trail's Butterfly
Garden
Written By:
Jacqui Roselione

In
honor of National Arbor Day and
Autism Awareness Month, students
in kindergarten and ACE
(autistic) classes planted a
butterfly shaped butterfly
garden. Many of the plants and
materials for the garden were
donated by local nurseries, while
Fox Trail's PTSA funded the rest
of the materials. One of our
Partners in Education, Publix,
and the YMCA, which provides our
afterschool program for Fox
Trail's special needs population,
each donated a case of drinking
water.
On
the day of the planting project,
coordinators Karin Rossy, parent,
and Jacqui Roselione, school SLP,
proudly introduced arborists from
the town of Davie who spoke to
the children about the origins of
Arbor Day and the importance of
plants to our world. They also
demonstrated how to properly
plant a tree with a donated
Cassia tree and six other
butterfly attracting plants to
the garden. Parent volunteers and
Peer Buddies were also in
attendance for this project. The
Peer Buddies are typical children
who have received special
training to help the autistic
cluster students learn and
practice social skills. This
project, which will help many
students learn about horticulture
and enjoy the garden, is
attributed to the partnership and
contributions of all
stakeholders.

These
Shoes Were
Made For Trotting
Written By:
Janet Mosher

At
Flamingo Elementary, the
students' shoes were made for
trotting, and that's just what
they did at the Western High
School Track. On January 22nd,
Flamingo held its second annual
technology trot to raise funds
for their many technology
endeavors.
Daily
commercials were broadcast over
the school's closed-circuit tv
system, computer-generated
posters were displayed around the
school, and letters were written
to community business partners.
Twenty-four corporate sponsors
responded with donations of
bicycles, scooters, boom boxes,
Florida Panther hockey tickets,
and gift certificates.
Davie
Mayor, Tom Truex, watched as the
students trotted a mile around
the high school track to very
loud and encouraging music! The
top amount raised by one student
was $322. After the trot,
students were awarded with
popcorn and Technology Trot
Certificates.
Students
and teachers once again had a
physically fit day while raising
money for the school. Everyone is
anxiously awaiting next year's
Tech Trot!
Come
on shoes, start trotting!
We will trot for technology
Helping Flamingo you and me
We are strong and we are
smart
We will always do our
part

Early
Childhood Interns
Written By:
Pam Wilkerson
Early
Childhood Interns from Western
High School prepare early for a
future career they are interested
in by working in kindergarten
classrooms for two semesters.
This is an opportunity for high
students to get a head start in
an educational career of their
choice. High school students,
with teacher support, follow the
kindergarten classroom routine
and assist students with their
daily tasks.

Science
IDEAS
Written By:
Wendy Chapman
Silver
Ridge is a model school for the
Science Ideas program. This is a
research-validated instructional
model of integrating reading and
language arts through a daily
2-hour instruction block.
The
Science IDEAS model for grades
3-8 evolved over a 15 year
period. The initial study in 1989
showed that 4th grade Science
IDEAS students displayed higher
achievement on nationally-normed
tests in reading comprehension
and in science (in comparison to
demographically similar students)
and more positive attitudes and
self-confidence toward reading
comprehension and science.
Expansion
of the Science IDEAS model to
over 50 classrooms and 1200
students across grades 3, 4, and
5 and to diverse (e.g. at risk)
student populations was
undertaken from 1989-1995. Again,
the same significant patterns of
findings on reading
comprehension, science
achievement on nationally-normed
tests, and affective outcomes
were obtained.
Applications
to post-secondary science
resulted in the present Science
Ideas model. The model, for both
elementary and middle school,
focuses the organization of all
science instruction upon the core
science concepts that reflect the
logical structure of science as a
discipline.
